TEXT FROM VEQ PRESS RELEASE:
Do you have a story to tell? “Memoirs of the English-speaking community” is your chance to pass down the rich cultural heritage of our English-speaking community to our youth. It’s time to share our stories and honour our past.
Remember, by sharing your personal life story you make it possible for our students to glimpse into the past of our institutions, community groups, hospitals and schools. It can be a mutually enriching experience. A story workshop will take place November 6th at the Jeffery Hale Pavilion.
Please call Amy Bilodeau at 418-683-2366 ext.226 to participate in the Memoirs project!
Our programs would not be the same without the contributions of our community volunteers. We greatly appreciate your time and energy, and provide the support and training necessary to ensure you enjoy your experience with us. We have many types of volunteer opportunities, which you will find listed on the volunteer application. At this time, we are specifically recruiting for adult tutors.TUTORINGOur tutoring program assists adult learners and continuing education students. Differing from our workshops, this program is student-driven, and focuses on the current material each student is working through. As a result, tutors are not expected to develop courses or study plans. We offer tutoring for three essential life skills: reading and writing, math, and computer skills. Currently recruiting tutors for adult learners- We are seeking tutors for basic computer skills (Microsoft Office programs, basic internet navigation, etc.)
- We are seeking tutors for math and reading/writing.
- Tutors will be provided necessary training prior to being matched with a student.
Please share this information if you know someone who might be a strong literacy volunteer with QCRC. Interested? Please fill out our volunteer application.Questions? Please contact the QCRC office directly.
March 29, 2012 Eastern Quebec Learning Centre hosted an afternoon tea in honor of Quebec City Reading Council. Stephen Burke (Chairman) and Marielle Stewart (Director General) of the Central Quebec School Board joined EQLC Director Susie Faguy in stating their appreciation for QCRC's 35 years of providing adult and family literacy services in our community. Ms. Stewart said, "I would like to thank the Quebec City Reading Council for the pivotal role that they play in supporting our Adult Learners [...] The Quebec City Reading Council is instrumental in improving student success in our Adult and Vocational Education programs, CQSB and EQLC are very fortunate to have such a devoted and caring partner in the Quebec City Reading Council." Cynthia Michaud, SARCA Special Projects Officer at EQLC, shared the history and lore of British-style tea with the students, staff, and QCRC members present. The participants enjoyed scones, cucumber sandwiches, and trifle, and agreed that the event should become an annual element of the EQLC+QCRC effort to celebrate Adult Learner Week. See below for full text of Ms. Stewart's recognition speech.
The Quebec City Reading Council extends our sincerest thanks to CQSB and EQLC for their support of QCRC! We are delighted to share such a strategic, effective partnership in the joint effort to support local adult learners. QCRC RECOGNITION SPEECH given March 29, 2012 by Ms. Marielle Stewart, Director General of Central Quebec School Board
"For those of you who may not know me, I am Marielle Stewart, Director General of the Central Quebec School Board. I would like to start by extending a heartfelt thank you to Susie Faguy and her wonderful team for inviting me to participate in this lovely celebration highlighting the Adult Learner's Week at the Centre. What a joy to see you all here!
I am indeed very honoured to be here, and may I add, very proud to be an Adult Learner myself! My children, who are now adults, and I continue to take courses to improve our knowledge base, to upgrade our skills, to keep abreast of new research in learning and truthfully - just to enjoy the journey that learning provides us!
At the Central Quebec School Board, our vision of Learning for All is not just a bunch of words, but rather is proof that we believe in life-long learning. We strive to provide all of our students with the skills and the desire to learn and to enjoy the benefits that it provides!
I would like to thank the Quebec City Reading Council for the pivotal role that they play in supporting our Adult Learners with language and math skills. Their contribution is absolutely precious to each and every person to whom they reach out. The Quebec City Reading Council is instrumental in improving student success in our Adult and Vocational Education programmes. Their actions and expertise enable the Central Quebec School Board to meet the student success goals set out in our Partnership Agreement with the Ministry of Education - that is - to reach a target of 87% (by the year 2020) of our students who will have the necessary knowledge and skills to graduate.
CQSB and EQLC are very fortunate to have such a devoted and caring partner in the Quebec City Reading Council. As a matter of fact, the presence and contributions of Cathy Nolan as a community representative on the EQLC Governing Board is just another testimony to their commitment to our students' success!
On behalf of the School Board, members of the Council of Commissioners, our schools and Centre, and of course, our adult learners, I would like to congratulate you for your desire to help, your will to learn, the joy that inhabits you and that you share through your teaching and learning, and last but not least, for your many successes - those achieved and those to come!!"
Family Literacy Day - What a great way to start the year! We teamed up with the Jeffery Hale Community Services, and had a delightful, cozy event with the Take-A-Break parents. Our volunteer, Danielle, gave a great dramatic reading demonstration, a couple of lucky parents won gift certificates to support their family reading habits! We also shared some "reading ideas" pamphlets, which provide book suggestions for children ages birth-4. See below for PDF versions of these hand-outs. Travellin' Toddler Time - A Morning That Counts! The 2012 Toddler Time season kicked off with a February session here at QCRC. We had a "full crowd", and enjoyed the numbers theme thoroughly - counting blind mice and farm animals in our stories, and making Valentine's mice as the craft. We had a handful of great volunteers, and even one new one!
The next TTT session at QCRC is in May. See the file below to download the full schedule. Tutoring We have a solid cohort of tutor-student pairs this spring, including several continuing from last autumn. We are currently seeking tutors for math, reading and writing, and computer skills (particularly Microsoft programs like Excel, Word and Powerpoint). Please contact us today, if you would like to volunteer!
Did you know...? QCRC offers FREE one-on-one lessons for adults (16+). We are able to help with a range of student-driven topics, including secondary or CEGEP studies, preparation for citizenship or driving exams, etc. Please contact us today if you know of someone who could benefit from our services. | travellin_toddler_time_schedule_2011-2012.doc | | File Size: | 1069 kb | | File Type: | doc | Download File
