GARDENING DISCUSSION & PLANT/SEED EXCHANGE
Participants will engage with topics such as favorite vegetables and past gardening successes and failures.  This session is for gardeners of all experience levels, from beginners to folks who have "retired" from gardening.  Joyce Coutts will be present, to contribute a floral perspective to the discussion.  

The discussion may also cover urban gardening considerations such as in small spaces (containers and balconies), community gardening, and the urban agriculture sprouting up throught Quebec City.  Additional topics may include, but are not limited to, heirlooms, seeds vs. starts, local roof-top gardens, organic gardening, and more.

Participants are encouraged to bring photographs of their own gardens, and even plants or seeds to exchange with other participants.  We hope local gardeners will join us to share their expertise!

COUNTING THE COLOURS
We talk about “seeing the world through rose-coloured glasses,” “going green,”  “seeing red,” and even “finally showing our true colours” — in fact the concept and implication of specific colours, and the whole idea of colour itself form an important part of the way we experience the world around us. 

This six-part session, will explore the different ways in which we think about colours using short quotations from a variety of English authors, and should provide lots of scope for lively discussions.  The first five sessions will be facilitated discussions, focusing on various colours.  A 6th part in this series offers an opportunity to respond artistically to the theme of colours during a session of art en plein air.  Facilitated by Bethann G. Merkle, the art session will emphasize visual expression of colors.

PLEASE NOTE: These sessions are organized as a series, offering an in-depth opportunity to discuss the themes.  However, each session can "stand-alone,"  You are welcome to participate in the full series, or in whichever sessions you are able to attend.

Do computers scare you? Do you wonder what the internet really does?  Then this workshop is for you!  Participants will learn about internet searches, find out about that stuff everyone else seems to know, use Google to its maximum and just have fun.  Follow-up workshops on other basic computer skills may be scheduled later, depending on interest.

PLEASE NOTE: If you already use a computer regularly, know how to send and receive emails, or to do a Google search, we recommend you consider a more advanced workshop.

3rd ANNUAL KARAOKE IDOL March 28, 2012 
Students and staff celebrated Adult Learners Week with an enthusiastic turnout at the 3rd edition of our "Karaoke Idol" contest.  A collaboration between Quebec City Reading Council and Eastern Quebec Learning Centre, this event highlights our partnership, as well as the supportive and positive learning environment enjoyed by students, staff and the community at EQLC.  

QCRC Executive Director, Cathy Nolan explains:
"This event is absolute recognition that being able to read really CAN make a difference in your life. 
And, as lifelong learners, we are learning to embrace technology, we are learning about podcasts, iPads, downloading educational material from iTunes; even as we learn to read the lyrics of our favourite songs we get to share these experiences with our peers and have a great time in doing so.  The Board of Directors of QCRC is so very proud that Quebec City Reading Council is such a vibrant part of Adult Learners Week in Quebec!"

Eastern Quebec Learning Centre hosted an afternoon tea in honor of Quebec City Reading Council.  Stephen Burke (Chairman) and Marielle Stewart (Director General) of the Central Quebec School Board joined EQLC Director Susie Faguy in stating their appreciation for QCRC's 35 years of  providing adult and family literacy services in our community.  Ms. Stewart said, "I would like to thank the Quebec City Reading Council for the pivotal role that they play in supporting our Adult Learners [...]  The Quebec City Reading Council is instrumental in improving student success in our Adult and Vocational Education programs, CQSB and EQLC are very fortunate to have such a devoted and caring partner in the Quebec City Reading Council."  Cynthia Michaud, SARCA Special Projects Officer at EQLC, shared the history and lore of British-style tea with the students, staff, and QCRC members present.  The participants enjoyed scones, cucumber sandwiches, and trifle, and agreed that the event should become an annual element of the EQLC+QCRC effort to celebrate Adult Learner Week.  See below for full text of Ms. Stewart's recognition speech.

"For those of you who may not know me, I am Marielle Stewart, Director General of the Central Quebec School Board.  I would like to start by extending a heartfelt thank you to Susie Faguy and her wonderful team for inviting me to participate in this lovely celebration highlighting the Adult Learner's Week at the Centre.  What a joy to see you all here!

I am indeed very honoured to be here, and may I add, very proud to be an Adult Learner myself!  My children, who are now adults, and I continue to take courses to improve our knowledge base, to upgrade our skills, to keep abreast of new research in learning and truthfully - just to enjoy the journey that learning provides us!

At the Central Quebec School Board, our vision of Learning for All is not just a bunch of words, but rather is proof that we believe in life-long learning.  We strive to provide all of our students with the skills and the desire to learn and to enjoy the benefits that it provides!

I would like to thank the Quebec City Reading Council for the pivotal role that they play in supporting our Adult Learners with language and math skills.  Their contribution is absolutely precious to each and every person to whom they reach out.  The Quebec City Reading Council is instrumental in improving student success in our Adult and Vocational Education programmes. Their actions and expertise enable the Central Quebec School Board to meet the student success goals set out in our Partnership Agreement with the Ministry of Education - that is - to reach a target of 87% (by the year 2020) of our students who will have the necessary knowledge and skills to graduate.

CQSB and EQLC are very fortunate to have such a devoted and caring partner in the Quebec City Reading Council.  As a matter of fact, the presence and contributions of Cathy Nolan as a community representative on the EQLC Governing Board is just another testimony to their commitment to our students' success!

Family Literacy Day - What a great way to start the year!  
We teamed up with the Jeffery Hale Community Services, and had a delightful, cozy event with the Take-A-Break parents.  Our volunteer, Danielle, gave a great dramatic reading demonstration, a couple of lucky parents won gift certificates to support their family reading habits!   We also shared some "reading ideas" pamphlets, which provide book suggestions for children ages birth-4.  See below for PDF versions of these hand-outs.

Travellin' Toddler Time - A Morning That Counts!
The 2012 Toddler Time season kicked off with a February session here at QCRC.  We had a "full crowd", and enjoyed the numbers theme thoroughly - counting blind mice and farm animals in our stories, and making Valentine's mice as the craft.  We had a handful of great volunteers, and even one new one!

Tutoring
We have a solid cohort of tutor-student pairs this spring, including several continuing from last autumn.  We are currently seeking tutors for math, reading and writing, and computer skills (particularly Microsoft programs like Excel, Word and Powerpoint).  Please contact us today, if you would like to volunteer!

Did you know...?  
QCRC offers FREE one-on-one lessons for adults (16+).  We are able to help with a range of student-driven topics, including secondary or CEGEP studies, preparation for citizenship or driving exams, etc.  Please contact us today if you know of someone who could benefit from our services.

The Internet, and Google in particular, will be the main item on the menu.  We will also take a few minutes to look at USBs and Smart Boards.  You will have the opportunity to practice saving on a USB Flash memory device.  If you’d like to know more, come along to this workshop.   Bring your Internet-related question.  Computer access will be provided.

WORKSHOP 2
MicroSoft PowerPoint – “How-To” Part I & II
