Adult Education Week in Quebec (Karaoke Idol) at EQLC March 2010
By
Cathy Nolan, Executive Director, Quebec City Reading Council.
At the end of March, a group of students and staff from Quebec City
Reading Council and Eastern Quebec Learning Centre got
together to celebrate Adult Learners' Week in Quebec and
decided to face the music.
The event was a mixture of the traditional Karaoke singalong
with a somewhat American Idol twist to it - it was a great
success! We had lots of performers ready to take to the stage and
some of them even surprised us. They all deserved to win of course, so
it was no easy choice, but there was true talent out there.
Thanks to Quebec Association of Adult Learning for helping Quebec City Reading Council fund the event.
Here are some highlights from our event. Lots of fun and talent as
you can see. For a more detailed video of the event, featuring
our performers and our winners, just follow this LINK

Celebrating International Literacy Day 2009
By
Cathy Nolan, Executive Director, Quebec City Reading Council.
On
Saturday, September 12th, more than a hundred and fifty people visited
Eastern Quebec Learning Centre to celebrate International Literacy Day.
The event was organised by the Quebec City Reading Council to raise
awareness for literacy and sensitise the community to the fact that a
large number of the population can’t read or write as well as they
would like to.
The sun was shining and the kids had a chance to use up their energy on
the one of the bouncy castles, trade books and listen to stories while
eating lunch at the Teddy Bear’s picnic, sponsored by Valcartier Family
Centre.
"International Literacy Day offers a great opportunity to promote
literacy within our community," observed QCRC’s President Marilyn
Baxter. She was more than pleased, not only with the turnout, one
of the biggest to such an event since the organisation’s beginning, in
1980, but also because of the participation of many partners from the
community, such as Eastern Quebec Learning Centre, who hosted the event,
The Morin Centre, The Voice of English-Speaking Quebec, and CBC Radio’s
Susan Campbell who took the time to meet some of the Quebec AM audience.
Even the mayor of Quebec City, Mr. Regis Labeaume, found time in his
busy agenda to meet with his English-speaking constituents of all ages.
In addition
to the above mentioned, Quebec City Reading Council warmly thanks the
following groups and their volunteers for making this day a roaring
success. La Maison Anglaise, The Scouts, Quebec City Women’s Club,
Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph and LEARN Quebec.
