Mission and Goals
Our Mission
Quebec
City Reading Council is a volunteer-based not-for-profit organization.
We promote and support life-long learning through a variety of free
and confidential literacy services available to English-speaking adults in
the Quebec City area.
Our Statement of Beliefs
We believe that
literacy is a universal human right which can give individuals the tools
to more fully participate in the rights, responsibilities, and privileges
of citizenship. We believe
that learners need to be at the centre of all of our activities and
programs. We believe that by
providing a non-threatening and informal learning environment, we can
offer an educational alternative for adults who have been disadvantaged,
under-educated, or marginalized in our society.
Our Objectives
-
To recruit adults and youth and teach them to read, write or count using
volunteer tutors
-
To train tutors, motivate them,
support them and continually upgrade their skills through in-service workshops
-
To sensitize the public to the
problem of illiteracy through publicity and talks with local groups
-
To keep abreast of new trends in the
teaching of reading, writing and numeracy
-
To work in conjunction with similar projects and organizations in Quebec
and Canada
-
To foster Family
Literacy in the home, school and community through appropriate services
and activities
