Adult
Literacy Tutoring
QCRC offers free
and confidential one-on-one tutoring to community members aged 16 years
and older. Each learner is
paired with a qualified and dedicated tutor that develops a learning
plan based on individual needs and requirements.
On
average, a learner meets with his or her tutor for one hour every week.
The tutoring schedule can be set or flexible depending on the
arrangements made between the learner and the tutor. All tutoring sessions take place at the Eastern Quebec
Learning Centre (EQLC), one of our partner organizations. The EQLC is located at 3005 William Stuart in Sainte-Foy.
In addition
to traditional reading and writing tutoring, we can offer learners
literacy training with a computer, if desired.
Learners who feel comfortable with computers or who have an
interest in gaining more computer skills can request special computer
literacy training.
Finally, QCRC occasionally offers workshops to learners on special topics of
interest throughout the year.
Anyone
interested in becoming a tutor or learner within the Adult Literacy
Tutoring Program should contact Cathy or Susanne at (418) 681-1258 or e-mail
us at info@qcrc.org

Support
for 16+-year-old students
Are you falling behind in school?
Have you already
dropped out of school?
If you were
or are currently a struggling high school or CEGEP student 16 years of
age or older, we can help you.
QCRC offers a
literacy support and tutoring program to students who are struggling in
school due to literacy related problems.
Literacy difficulties are not uncommon.
In fact, one in every four Canadians battles with literacy
problems every day.
If
you have already dropped out, we can help you prepare to reintegrate
into the formal school system when you feel you are ready to return.
In addition, we can assist you with preparing to write high
school equivalency tests to receive your diploma.

Tutor
Training
All of our tutors
who wish to offer adults one-to-one assistance with
reading, writing and math are offered a basic 12-hour tutor
training.
Other
upgrading workshops are offered periodically as well.
QCRC encourages and requires volunteers to attend these
professional development workshops throughout the year.
Workshop themes include tutoring tips, the latest in literacy
research and skill development, learning styles, as well as several
other topics.
Each
literacy tutor is provided with a comprehensive Tutor Toolkit, comprised
of helpful resources to assist them during his or her tutoring
experience. The Toolkit includes sample lesson plans, activity sheets,
evaluation techniques, and helpful hints on specific problem areas
related to reading, writing, and math.
In
addition, experienced tutors are encouraged to act as mentors.

Senior’s
Reading Hour
This program was
introduced in 2004 and is offered in partnership with Saint Brigid’s
home.
On a
monthly basis, a QCRC volunteer visits residents at Saint Brigid’s
Home and reads a story, or set of short stories, to a group of seniors.
Saint Brigid’s Home is located at 1645 chemin Saint-Louis in
Quebec.
We believe that
this program encourages the maintenance of literacy skills for all ages,
as well as shares the joy of reading to those who are no longer able to
read for themselves.

Public
Awareness and Sensitization
At QCRC, we are
committed to enhancing public awareness on the reality of illiteracy
both regionally and nationally. Currently,
one in four Canadians struggle with reading, writing, and math skills on
a daily basis.
QCRC
attempts to raise public awareness through sharing information of
upcoming events through regular announcements in the media.
In addition, we contribute articles to local newspapers and
conduct interviews periodically on the radio and TV.
We regularly promote and celebrate events such as National Family
Literacy Day (January 27) and International Literacy Day (September 8).
Finally,
QCRC is often represented at various community events throughout the
year.
For more
information on QCRC or literacy statistics, please check out our
Publicity Package or the Facts on Literacy link
in our Links Section.
