People of Ukraine: Odesa’s Fight to Adapt and Endure.

Russia’s attack on Ukraine and the Ukrainians’ remarkable resistance are among the defining events of our time, with consequences that will be felt for decades. This presentation looks beyond the headlines to explore how the war is affecting the people of Odesa, including the city’s cultural identity and daily life.

Barry Lane travelled to Odesa from April to May 2026 to support the Ukrainian people and visit friends there. Drawing on firsthand experience, he will share how residents are adapting to wartime conditions and discuss his volunteer work with the Veterans Hub, which supports Ukrainian veterans returning to civilian life.

Barry will also welcome questions about the current military and geopolitical situation, offering participants a chance to better understand this complex conflict. Join us for a human-centred look at Odesa, its people, and a war that may be nearing a significant turning point.

Join presenters Brian Treggett and Jim Eames as they explore the origins and history of the Boer War in Africa. This presentation uncovers a unique local connection to the conflict through the historic diary of John Treggett, a Quebec volunteer who stepped forward to fight for the Empire in the early 20th century.

Quebec City is known as the birthplace of French civilization in North America, but its unique character was also shaped by strong British influence. Discover how English-speaking residents helped shape the city's architecture, businesses, institutions, and historic landmarks. From the timber trade boom of the 19th century to Lord Dufferin's efforts to preserve the city's fortifications, this fascinating presentation explores the lasting impact of British heritage on Quebec City.

Exciting news! Thanks to our partnership with the Morrin Centre, every QCRC family will receive a free one-year membership to one of the city's most beautiful English libraries and leading English-language cultural centres.

Enjoy a relaxed environment while getting helpful early learning literacy tips and borrowing books from our library. Join us at November's Early Learning Café for story time with Morrin Centre Education Coordinator Marie-Ange, followed by a discussion about their programs. Coffee, tea, and light refreshments are also available.

Children aged 0-5 are welcome and can discover our educational toys through unstructured playtime, and every new family will receive a set of Bob Books which are simple, phonics-based stories designed to help absolute beginners learn to read.
